Getting to Kyungpook National University

To Dong-Daegu (동대구, East Daegu)

From Seoul (Incheon) Airport, take the AREX to Seoul (서울) Station, and then the KTX (the high speed rail) to Dong-Daegu (동대구, East Daegu).

From Pusan (Gimhae) Airport, take the Hanjin Express Bus to Dong-Daegu. [link]. It is a short walk from the Hanjin Terminal to the DongDaegu KTX Station: [map]. Alternately, take a taxi to Gupo Train station (구보역) and then take a train to Dong-Daegu (about an hour).

Dong-Daegu to KNU

Take a taxi to the North Gate of the University (app. 4700 won). [map]. The math department is in the College of Natural Sciences Building, which is building 209 on this [map]
If you are coming to the Guest House, it would be better to come this way: [map]

Notes

  • You can buy a combined AREX-KTX ticket at the airport.
  • Dong-Daegu is often transliterated as Tong-Taegu. Gimhae as Kimhae. Pusan as Busan.
  • To use a credit card for a train ticket, you will usually need the PIN.
  • Taxis in Seoul take credit cards, taxis in Daegu usually don't.
  • Deluxe taxis do take credit cards, but cost about twice as much as normal taxis. The taxi drivers soliciting customers at the train station will be for deluxe taxis.
  • T-money and Seoul transit cards do not work for transit in Daegu.
  • There is free wifi on the KTX. Open a browser and click the agreement (which is in korean). Then you can use it upto some usage cap that they approximate as 1 hour of browsing or 10 minutes of streaming video.
  • If you are taking a train from Gupo in Pusan, you will probably not take the KTX but a slower train. In this case, the train will stop at both Dong-Daegu station and Daegu station. Dong-Daegu is closer to the University. Daegu is downtown (still not so far, maybe a 15 minute taxi ride). Dong-Daegu is first when you are coming from Pusan.

Getting to Daegu

From Incheon Airport in Seoul to Dong-Daegu

By Air

From Incheon Airport in Seoul, you can fly directly to Daegu, but the flights are infrequent, so this is usually inconvenient. Korean air flys to Daegu at 8:30am (KE1413) and 7:20pm (KE1411) everyday. The flight takes about an hour. In the other direction flights from Daegu to Seoul leave at 7:05am (KE1412) and 4:30pm (KE1414). These flights cost about 70,000 won. The schedules are of course subject to change, but they have been approximately this for quite a while.

By train

With the completion of the airport express train (AREX) between Incheon and Seoul train Station, there is the clear choice for connecting to Daegu: take the AREX to Seoul Station, and then the KTX (the high speed rail) to Dong-Daegu (lit. East Daegu).

The AREX takes 53 minutes (regular) or 43 minutes (express). The prices are (approximately) 3,800 won (+500 deposit) and 13,300 won respectively. If you buy both together before hand, or at the airport, there is a discount which makes the prices almost the same.

The KTX from Seoul (서울) Station to Dong-Daegu (동대구) station takes appoximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. It costs about 40,000 won for an economy seat and about 60,000 for a first class seat. There are slower trains from Seoul Station that are cheaper- as cheap as 20,000 won but taking 4 and a half hours. If you take these, be careful where you get off. There is also a Daegu station, which the KTX doesn't stop at, and is slightly less convenient to the university.

By Bus

You can get a highway bus from Incheon to Daegu. It takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes and costs around 34,000 won. The busses to Dong-Daegu leave from bus gate 10C and you can buy a ticket at the office near the gate. Info.

Getting to KNU

Dongdaegu Station to KNU

Walk

It takes about 45 minutes. [map]

Bus

The best is probably to take the 순한2 or 순한2 -1 from in front of Dong-Daegu Station to either 동대구시장 (Dong-Daegu Market) or 북구산거관리위원회앞, depending on if you are going to the dorm or the deparment. You then have a 5 minute walk. map A bus costs 1200 won. You should have correct change. They will give change for 2000 won, but you could have trouble with 10000. Your Seoul transit cards or T-Money cards won't work.

Daegu Airport to KNU

Here's the map .

Taxi

A taxi costs about 4000-5000 won. You should tell them to go to the north gate: 경북대학교 북문, pronounced kyong-buk day-hak-kyo bung-mun. Taxis in Daegu usually don't take credit cards, so have money with you.

Bus

Take the 719 bus going west. (You do not have to cross the highway to get the 719 west.) You can get off at Kyung-buk North Gate, or the next stop. It is about 8 stops from the airport. (The bus route is a bit different from the red line on my map.) A bus costs 1200 won. You should have correct change, or almost correct. They will give change for 2000 won, but you could have trouble with 10000. Your Seoul transit cards or T-Money cards won't work.
